Healthy Tips for the Traveling Consultant

As people who travel more than 50% of our time for work, we know quite a bit about the consulting life. We know where to book the best rates on flights, where to find the cheapest rental cars, and which hotels have the best beds or worst coffee. Divurgent works with an awesome group of consultants, trainers, and analysts that can relate to this all too well. Despite all these tricks of the trade, we still haven’t mastered how to stay in shape while on assignment.

Many of us have fantastic nutrition and fitness habits at home, but those good habits seem to get left behind with the pets the second we head to the airport. However, all is not lost…

Here are a few tips to help you stay on the move while you’re on the road:

  1. Do Your Homework – Before you leave for your project look up your hotel and see what gym facilities they offer or what is in the surrounding area. Ask yourself these questions: Do they offer a pool? Are there any parks/trails nearby? What healthy food options are close?
  2. Be Prepared – Adding a resistance band or jump rope to your suitcase when you travel definitely won’t add extra weight to your luggage. By having these simple items, you can transform your hotel room into a mini-gym.
  3. Get to Steppin’ – Oftentimes, we can get easy “workouts” in without even realizing it. Skip the elevator and take the stairs whenever possible to get in those extra steps. For an added challenge, clip on a pedometer and see just how many steps you can take!
  4. Teamwork – Find a partner or group and take walks/jogs together. Find ways to hold fellow consultants accountable to staying active, and make it fun!

Remember: People who exercise as little as 15 minutes a day have a 14% lower mortality risk than people who don’t exercise at all. An extra 15 minutes per day can save your life!
