The healthcare industry in general is faced with the growing problem of physician burnout. Physicians spend up to half of their day documenting in an EHR, resulting in lower patient satisfaction and increased burnout, which can cost an organization up to $1M in turnover-related costs per physician. This is why our client, a large, integrated hospital network in the northeast with seven hospital campuses that include 6,000+ physicians, 3,000+ beds, and 35,000 employees, approached us to proactively address the challenge of physician burnout.

Throughout the project, we collaborated with IT, informatics, training, and operational teams to develop a program that focused on physician workflows, personalization, and technology improvements.

Opportunity Identification
Analyzed EHR efficiency, revenue productivity, burnout data, time live on the system, and survey data

Developed custom models and metrics aligning optimization priorities with organizational goals
Outreach Plan
Created a strategy targeting “controllable time” and prioritizing indicators for overages of system use
Mobile-friendly Dashboards
Dashboards provided specialists with a real-time view of system usage and target metrics before and after intervention

Armed with the mobile efficiency data and a list of providers and targets to address, the optimization team assessed system workflow and provider system use. After working 1:1 with over 300 providers and providing department-wide personalization support, the team delivered the following results:
